District 3, Board of Supervisors
San Francisco, CA
November 4, 2008
The major issues facing the district: development of new affordable homes, creating more open and green space, putting money into the police department and working with them to try and clean up the Entertainment area on Broadway and how to fix the piers. All of the candidates also would like to be doing more for small businesses. All the candidates express concern about crime and the problem of weekend chaos on Broadway after bars and clubs close. Many suggested changes at the Entertainment Commission, which oversees clubs in the city.
Proposition 8
Endorsed Vote: No Endorsement
This proposition is to stop gay marriages to continue in California. Therefore, only a man and a woman can get married. If this proposition passes, schools will not teach that same-sex marriages are the same traditional marriage. If it doesn't pass then schools will teach it and students will learn, growing up thinking same-sex marriages is ok. Same sex marriages shouldn't be taught in schools because this is a delicate topic that not everyone understands and may have different opinions about it. Parents have the right to deny their children learning about this matter until they feel it is appropriate for their child to know about it. I think students should be educated about this at a certain age such as when they become an adult, not earlier because it robs them from their youth. I think gay people shouldn't get married. It has never been legalized in California, so why should it now? Marriage has always been between a man and a woman and it should maintain that way always. VOTE YES ON PROP 8.

Lynn Jefferson
Endorsed Vote: Yes
Occupation: Neighborhood activist
"Jefferson is a 15-year resident of San Francisco and a former Realtor. She has served in several executive positions in the North Beach Neighbors organization and has been a board member of the North Beach Merchants Association and a team leader for Project Homeless Connect."
"Jefferson wants to implement Laura's Law, allowing court-ordered commitment of people with severe mental problems, in conjunction with the Community Justice Center. She supports mandatory licenses for entertainment promoters and wants to create more anti-crime neighborhood watch groups." Jefferson would like to reform our planning process, particularly in North Beach, so it would be easier for businesses to open.
I think its important to have a lot of the people on the streets to get help. They once had the help before all the mental hospitals were closed down. She doesn’t have a lot of experience in government positions but she has taken the lead in many local organizations.

David Chui
Endorsed Vote: Yes
Occupation: Attorney and chief operating officer of Grassroots Enterprise, an online political consulting firm.
He has lived in the district for 12 years and he serves on the city's Small Business Commission and on the Democratic County Central Committee.
He would like to create a special court to take care of non-violent crimes which would in the end lower the amount of money spent sending people through lengthy and expensive court.
He also wants to allow immigrant parents the right to vote on the school boards.
He is also very concerned about health care and paid sick days.
The Grassroots Enterprise is an online tool for organizations and campaigns.
He cares very much for the rights of the local and every day person and wants to keep moving the district forward towards a safer and cleaner area. I have been reading great things about him and he seems the best and most appropriate for the job out of the eight candidates.
